Do you call that a hat? I said to my wife.
“你把那个叫帽子吗？”我对妻子说。
You needn t be so rude about it, my wife answered as she looked at herself in the mirror.
“你说话没必要这样不客气，”我的妻子边回答边照着镜子。
I sat down on one of those modern chairs with holes in it and waited.
我坐在一个新式的满是网眼儿的椅子上，等待着。
We had been in the hat shop for half an hour and my wife was still in front of the mirror.
我们在这家帽店已经呆了半个小时了，而我的妻子仍在镜子面前。
We mustn t buy things we don t need, I remarked suddenly. I regretted saying it almost at once.

You needn t have said that, my wife answered.

I needn t remind you of that terrible tie you bought yesterday.

I find it beautiful, I said. A man can never have too many ties.

And a woman can t have too many hats, she answered.

Ten minutes later we walked out of the shop together.

本课侧重复习情态动词must和need以及动词短语have to的用法。今天，我们就来重点看看need的用法。
need在英语里被称作半情态动词，当用作情态动词时，其用法为need do sth，否定形式为needn’t do sth 。例如：
I wonder if we need take sleeping bag.
我不知道是否需要带睡袋。
He needn’t go there tomorrow.
明天他不必去了。
need用作情态动词时没有人称、时态及语态的变化，后面直接跟动词原形构成句子的谓语，表示“必须，必要”，一般用于否定句或疑问句中。如：
We’ve got plenty of time. We needn’t hurry.
我们有足够的时间，我们不必着急。
Joe can stay here. He needn’t come with us.
乔可以留在这里，他不必和我们一起去。
当need用作实义动词时，用法为need sth.或need to do sth，此时need有动词的全部变化形式。如：
We don’t need to hurry.
我们不需要着急。
Does he need any help?
他需要帮助吗？
Tom needed to be helped over the difficulty.
汤姆需要帮助来克服困难。
下面，再来比较needn’t do和needn’t have done的用法，先看两句例句吧!
Everything will be OK. You needn’t worry.
一切都会好起来的，你不用担心。（表示没有必要）
Everything was OK. You needn’t have worried.
一切都还好，你不必担心。（表示你担心了，但没必要）
这里 needn’t have done sth. 侧重于这件事做了，但是现在知道其实没有必要。
